Our Big Comic Day

Today was a big comic day for Riverside Reads, even though we didn’t actually write or draw any. What we did do was read a bunch of them, and put a bunch of them together to send to our comic pen pals..
We received the first batch of comics, graphic novels and art books that the Innovative Learning Grant (ILF), awarded by t he Government of New Brunswick, allowed us to purchase. The purpose for including the money for the books in the grant proposal was twofold. One reason was that I wanted a wide range of books that included different genres of storytelling and different visual styles. The Riverside Reads staff is not all that familiar with what types of comics are out there, so I want them to experience all that comics have to offer. The other reason was to encourage in the students the joy of reading.
Well, it worked. I brought out the stack of books right before lunch, and the only noise for the next ten minutes was the turning of pages.
As was already mentioned, we also spent part of our afternoon putting together a bunch of comics to be sent to our comic “pen pals”. We had ourselves a “staple party”. We are involved in a comic exchange with a pair of middle school comic creating classes in Seattle, Washington. We received our copies this morning, but we just sent them ours (the bio-comic found HERE) this afternoon…sorry for being so late. Those kids did an amazing job and are a big inspiration to Riverside Reads.
