My Community Now and Then

I live in the community of Hopewell Cape in southeastern Albert County. I live near the world famous Hopewell Rocks so hundreds of people in the summer stop by my community.

What I kike about living in my community is that I can go see the Hopewell Rocks just about anytime I want to because I live close to the Hopewell Rocks. In the summer I can go to the museum anytime I want to because I live just up the road from it. I can take my dog for a walk and don’t have to worry about being attacked by a crazy person.

The Bed and Breakfast in the Hopewell Cape is in back of the Old Great Road where I live. The lady that runs the Bed and Breakfast was lonely so we gave her a kitten. The name of the Bed and Breakfast is Akio’s Villa.

At the Rocks View Varity store, you can order takeout food and pick it up on your way by. Everyone in Hopewell Cape appreciates being able to rent movies and buy groceries, fresh meat and of course nighttime necessities like pop, candy and chips.

To accommodate tourists, Hopewell Cape has a large motel that also has a restaurant and gift shop. It is busy from the end of May until Thanksgiving. It also provides seasonal employment for many local people. Hopewell Cape many years ago was known for shipbuilding. Many ships from far away places would come to the wharves. Many of the large beautiful homes that are still there today were built at this time. One house along the main road has a widow’s walk on the roof. This was so the wife of the seaman could watch for her husband’s ship to come back to port. Many sea captains lived in Hopewell Cape.

Hopewell Cape was called a shiretown because it had a courthouse. The courthouse, which still stands on the property beside the museum, was built in 1904. It is a very impressive building where trials and government business for all of Albert County used to be done. The municipal government held sessions at the Hopewell Cape courthouse until 1965.

Many years ago when Hopewell Cape was an exciting community, there was so much traffic that there was a wooden sidewalk that went through the village.

The Albert County museum in Hopewell Cape is visited by tourists and local people each summer. Did you know that the museum was once the jail for the county? It was also at this jail that a young man named Tom Collins was hanged after being convicted of murder. Many people today after reading the trial transcripts believe that he was innocent.

Hopewell Cape is a friendly community where life is peaceful.
